So I was looking at buying some acrylic rods for aquascaping some live rock and the site I was looking at had extruded rod and cast rod which is quite a bit more expensive. So my question is what is the difference between the two and will either of them be fine for aquascaping and misc reef projects?

If you do answer this question please post pix of the aquascape with the rods in use. I'd like to see that.

I think I purchased mine off Ebay, best price I could find and it was a buy it now auction..I bought 1/4" for the smaller rock, and 1/2" for the bigger rocks to make my colums.

One is extruded which means its squeeZed in a mold and extruded which is not nearly as strong and clear as cast... Cast acrylic is just that it's poured into mold and cast with a lot higher molecular chain level there for stronger and clearer... Either will work just fine rock work I used extruded myself.... You can even get fiberglass rods or driveway markers at most home depots that work well also.... My last go arOund I used the nylon rod from Marco rocks it works decent but nearly as sturdy as acrylic IMHO... Hth:)

i used fiberglass rods specifically those driveway marker ones from most hardware stores. they are like 2$ for a 4'

I can post a pic of the rods when I get'em, but its going to be awhile before this tank gets setup. I'm pretty deliberate(cheap) when it comes to accumulating equipment.

Doug I would just use the fiberglass rods you can find at HD. They are way cheaper.

Otherwise if your looking for Rods I do have some also.

Just placed an order for a whole bunch of acrylic rods. I picked up 12' of 1/4" for a project and 18' fo 3/8" for rockwork and at least 6' of 3 different smaller sizes for about $16 shipping included;) I prolly should have ordered 6' of 1/2" though.

What would you do that for? I could have gotten it for free for you.... lol

Oh well its always nice to have anyways just in case.. What you doing for a tank?

40br with a 30br for a sump/frag tank. I will prolly be ordering an ati sunpower fixture in the next couple days for it. Still trying to hammer down if I should drill the tank on the bottom or back. I'm paranoid about it cracking in the middle of the night and am convinced one way is safer than the other;) Just wish I knew which was better.
