So I saw a post recently where someone made acrylic supports for rockwork. Basically they took an acrylic rod and glued it to a flat piece of acrylic that was then inserted into pre-drilled holes in the rocks allowing for taller thinner column like structures.

Is this what I would need? https://www.amazon.com/American-Edu...F8&qid=1513135531&sr=1-1&keywords=acrylic+rod

Also do the rods offer that much support? I feel like they would either flex and the weight of the rock would end up causing them to fail like snapping off the base.Or do they just provide temporary support so you can cement rock together for the true support of the structure.

They do flex, glued correctly it would take a lot to snap them off the base, but it's possible.
The ones in your link look fine to me.

Use them as added structural support, not as load bearing for the entire weight of the rock, and you should be fine.

I have used the fiberglass driveway marker rods before with no issues. They don’t bend under the weight either.
