Acrylic tubing vs pvc

Has anyone ever used acrylic pipe/tube instead of pvc?

There are two issues I'd have with acrylic pipe:

1. It's clear and would grow algae within.

2. Difficulty finding fittings such as tees, elbows and the like.

PVC is cheap, easy to cut and fittings are readily available at my local box store.
