Adding sand to existing tank ?

IME, it's a heck of a lot easier to add things in increments (e.g., biome and critters) with some degree of control versus trying to rid the tank of nasty critters & microbes after the fact.

I'd rinse dry sand (thoroughly) and use that.

Dinos are in everyone's tank just normally in very small numbers. What happens is if the conditions are right, they explode and take over. There are lots of theories as to what that trigger is, low nutrients etc, but I don't think we actually know the exact answer or there is multiple things that can trigger an outbreak. It tends to be newer tanks.

I suspect it has something to do with nutrient levels in your tank and the natural bacterial balance in your tank being out of whack.
