Hello Reef2reef!

Tank dimensions (inches) are 48 x 18 x 18.
I have roughly 1.5 inches of special grade reef sand, 25 pounds of dry rock, 8 pounds of live ocean rock.

I am building an in-tank enclosure to serve as a cryptic zone, which is estimated to take up 10 x 8 x 10 inches. This will substantially reduce the amount of swimming space within the tank.

I intend a total of 7 fish primarily for Chinese/FengShui superstitious reasons (either 7 or 9). I have 4 fish accounted for below and would appreciate some suggestions on the last 3.

Fish accounted for:
1. 2-inch ocellaris clownfish (carryover)
2. 1.5-inch black clown goby (carryover)
3. Pink-Streaked Wrasse (preordered)
4. Another ocelleris clownfish with the goal of forming a mating pair with the existing one (not yet decided on design)

Requirements:
* REEF SAFE for mixed reef.
* Peaceful, gets along with accounted for fish.
* Hardy and relatively indestructible: can survive off of an auto feeder with fish pellets indefinitely, and pick on any pods and macro organisms in the tank.
* Realistically this is how I’ve kept all my fish in the past, and this will be the setup new fish will have to adapt to.
* There “may” be some additional feeding with frozen and live foods going forward, but I don’t want that to be the norm.

Preferences:
* Algae Utilitarian. I’m pretty sure tangs are out of the picture for my setup. But would be nice to have a fish help lighten the load of the CUC.
* Maybe a sand sifter. But how do I avoid trouble makers?
* Different/interesting colors/behavioral patterns.

Ideas:
* Goby with shrimp symbiotic pair

In the end, I’m primarily in this hobby for the corals.
Worse case, to get a body count of 7, I just want 3 fish that will get along and won’t grow out of this tank for a while. They can even be the same species.

You will want some kind of herbivore. Does not have to be a tang, there are lots in the way of blennies.

You could potentially get one of the smaller tangs like a Tomini or White Tail Bristletooth but if you aren’t willing to put in algae sheets in a regular basis then you should probably avoid them.

I had a tail spot blenny in the past. Was healthy but passed during a power outage. Though I did see it bite things, it didn’t leave a dent algae wise.

I’m open to getting another tail spot blenny. Are there any other specific types you recommend?

Yeah, I don’t think it’ll be a good fit long term

+1 on the pink streaked!

I just added a Yashi Goby and pistol shrimp, and within 12 hours, they matted. Fun to watch!

I have a lawnmower blenny. I also have a bristletooth tang, and a coral beauty angel
