I used just 1/2” tubing on both of my tanks. Then reduced down to whatever size was on the intake of the skimmer.

I ran a pvc because of the distance between the sump and the outside access (20 ft). It was a clean look.
I also used 1 inch pvc to allow good air flow to the skimmer. It worked great. I could hear the air-suction sound on the outside end of the pvc.

what does everyone use? pvc pipes or tubing?
Lucky to have a handy exit point just behind the aquarium. Used 1/2 " PVC thru the floor, tubing to the exit point. A small piece of foam, no more than 1" deep (more will restrict air draw) to muffle air intake on outside. Cover outside end with plastic screen, secure with foil tape and/or cable tie around pipe. Made a big difference in tank ph.
