Algae eaters

Hey R2R, I’m looking for some opinions on a good utilitarian algae eater for a smaller mixed reef (60 gal) I’ve had kole eye tangs in the past but I know it would be “renting” one due to tank size when I did have one it was my hardest working fish. I’ve never had a lawnmower or any smaller eaters. So if you can shed some light on the situation I’d appreciate it.

Lawnmower blennies seem to be work horses with algae control. I like snails though...trochus, astraea, Mexican turbos all do great in my tank.

Urchins are big algae eaters. I think 1 urchin can do the work of 20 snails. A few reasons you might not want one, so check into those and see if they apply to you, but nothing else compares to them when it comes to eating algae.

Anyone has any experience with lawn mover blenny and Green Bird Wrasse... My green bird wrasse killed my Blenny ... probably he thought Blenny as threat or so ... I still have the Green bird wrasse ... and he is really beautiful ... permanent member of my tank!

As a matter fact I have heard that. I have no experience with them but I’ve heard blue urchins are really good but they occasionally pick up frags lol

No occasionally to it. They will pick up anything that isn't securely glued down. That being said, they are awesome algae eaters. You might consider a tuxedo urchin. They don't get too big, they do a great job, and they look really cool.

Can tuxedo urchins survive in tank with picasso trigger, bird wrasse, red corris wrasse, Harlequin tusks, etc fowlr fishes?
