Hey all,
Was waiting a while to post this but figured I would gather some opinions to see what people think. Little bit of a backstory I need to give here before asking though…
On May 1st I added two diamond gobys to my 200 gal(originally planned on one but two were shipped and had to make a choice). The sand prior to this was pretty nasty and not touched very much, so they definitely had a lot to process and work through. I waited patiently up till about 1.5 weeks ago before I made any real changes, hoping they would process the backlog and fix the issue at hand. The issue is that the amount of fines and gunk in the water column has not really gotten less. I know that the stuff being put into the water column is good and gives it a chance to export but I did think by this point I would start to see less fines and mess on a daily basis. My running theory is that some of it is being exported and some of it is resettling and that maybe my flow is not getting enough down the overflow?
Things I have tried:
1. Turned return to 90% to see if I could get more down the overflow
2. Have changed floss daily since June (originally I had lots of algae which was being fueled by the fines but I have since handled the algae problem)
3. 1.5 weeks ago I added a fourth mp40 to try to help circulation(still waiting to see if this has impact).
4. Added a 1 hour mode of nutrient export (mp40s) and sprayed the rocks every day before it to lift material off them in a hopes to help export more. I stopped spraying about 2 weeks ago as I wasn’t sure it was helping
Below is a picture or two of what 24 hour floss looks like…obviously moving a diamond goby to my 40 (one of them) is a logical step but I’d really love to solve the situation without doing that. My nitrates have moved around a bit lately which I think is related to the fines, but can’t say for sure until I can eliminate some things. It’s hard to get a picture of the fines but just imagine a snowglobe at times in your tank
. I’m also not convinced that my current fish load can even produce as much as is being pulled out in a day so I almost have to believe it’s a backlog? I have 18 fish total in the tank, I should also mention tank is just about 1 year old, and the sand was not touched before the gobys were added so decent while
