ALK SWING DURING WATER CHANGE

Hi Randy. I have a question. On my current 120 gallon setup i try to keep my alk at around 8. I use nsw and it usually runs at a little over 7. There are times during days of rainfall that i don't like to collect water so i keep a bucket of IO regular on hand. The IO usually mixes at around 9-10 alk. My total water volume is around 105 gallons. I do a weekly 10 gal water change. How much do you think my alk will change doing this size water change? Thanks

You could always use muric acid (spelled wrong) in your io water to lower alk. A little goes a long way so be careful. I use 40ml in 100gallons of mixed iorc to get it from 12ish to 7-7.5ish

I will let Randy answer, but changing 10 gallons in a 105 gallon system isn't going to change your ALK much, if at all.

How ling do i have to mix it before use?

Sorry I should have included this but forgot cause been doing for so long. After adding acid you much use air stone to off gas water to get ph back up. Generally I do this for 48 hours then use water

So I add water then salt and a mixing pump for 10 min then add air and acid and let mix with air for 48 hours then I’m 100% sure it’s good for me

Water change volume ÷ tank volume = percent of water being changed.

For you its 10/105= 0.095....

Then alk of new water - alk of old water

10-8=2

Then difference of alk × percent of water change

2 × 0.095 = 0.19

So if you do a 10g water change with alk of 10 in 105g water volume with alk of 8 you would see an increase of roughly 0.2dkh.

For small water changes like noted above, the alk change is very small and not worth worrying about.
