anemone base

hi friends

any idea why at times anemone's base is swollen like this? it's been more than a week now still he is not inflating. He is not moving around now but he is not fully inflating. any idea #reefsquad ?

Something is out of whack with your water. Are all params in order?

How old is the tank. What are your water parameters specifically. And what lighting do you have it under?

It looks like a long tentacle anamone .. normally they attach their foot in the sand .. if he’s not attached I’d try and take a look and see if his foot is torn anywhere .. if it’s torn they normally don’t recover from it .. so then you might want too think about taking it back too where you got it from if that’s the case ..

Hi @Bob Loblaw and @Crabs Mcjones It's just 1 month old now. I know only my KH test result which is 8. I've ordered a full API test kit and will get it within next few days. I've been adding all these minerals (See screenshot) once a week to maintain the minerals levels.

@Jason mack its a bubble tip, from what i can closely it's not damaged. I can see the firm grip and he is settled down with that rock but at times it's swollen like this.

I would stop adding the chemicals until you're able to test them to see where they're at. Something could be way out of wack. One month old in my opinion is way to young to be housing an anemone. What lighting do you have him under, these guys generally need pretty strong lighting.

Anamones do beter in more mature tanks 8-12 months old... I think your tank is too new .. and testing is a must .. has your tank cycled ?? Have you tested for ammonia or nitrite at all and to be honest I wouldn’t be adding anything yet other than good bacteria .. water changes will take care of your trace elements at this stage of your tank .. and adding anything without being able too test can bring a lot of headaches .. here’s some links for you too read..

hm i know i shouldn't be giving these kinda answers but i really dunno what kinda light setup is this. I never asked them coz i thought its a small tank and it should be fine. I can call my LFS in another 4-5 hrs and ask them what type of light is this.

Schedule is 8 hours per day as per their recommendation.

@Jason mack I agree 100%. Actually this LFS they sell salt water (cycled) which is ready made. So we don't have to cycle them manually. It's just bring back home, let it settle down for 2-3 hours add your fish inside kind of a thing. I know I made a grave mistake for not testing the water params. That's what I'm gonna do now.

2. So this tank wasn't cycled. "Cycled water" isn't a thing even though your LFS will try to tell you it is.

3. You don't know what your parameters are, which is another issue.

4. That light is most likely not sufficient for that nem.

So where do we go from here?
- For starters, I would find a new LFS. They've not been very honest with you.
- Second, you need to get some tests run ASAP.
- Third, do you know any reefers who could possibly try to nurse that nem back to health for you, or is there any chance you can return it at this point? It's not going to survive in that tank most likely.
- Fourth, the stickies that were linked are a good place to start. You're well behind the curve here and if you're forced into keeping that Nem we're going to play heck trying to save it with all the other issues.

Keep in mind, that while not every local fish store is this way, some are only it for your money, so they'll tell you whatever you want to hear to make a buck. Whereas users such as us, were not paid for what we do (even though @Amoo makes triple that;) ). We do it for the love of reefing and to see others succeed :)

Thank you very much @Amoo I will follow your advise. I'll contact some new LFS and I will also do my tests asap. I agree with you, my nem seems very unsettled. I will try and find a new home for him.

For best results, add a level spoon ti every 100L of aquarim water on a weekly basis. Super bacteria is also applicable when water is cloudy or when ammonia and nitrite us detected.

They basically gave you a bottle of insta-start which is a bottle of the bacteria that consumes ammonia. The tank still needs to be cycled though so the bacteria from the bottle can colonize your rock and filtration.
