It’s been 5-6 months since I got a bubble tip anemone. It has ~doubled in size and during the day it seems puffy and bubbly and expanded (see picture below under both blue and white light). At night the tips deflate a bit or it closes up. However, it seems to have turned mostly brown, vs. had some bits of red and green coloration when I bought it from the LFS. I’m running 2 AI Prime’s over an IM 40L AIO (at roughly BRS settings for the 40gal breeder) and most other corals I’ve gotten mostly match the coloration or have improved in coloration since coming from the LFS so I’m curious if other anemone owners / experts have a view on whether this is healthy anemone behavior or if I should be worried about it losing coloration?
If it’s healthy, are there specific parameters or lighting changes that might help encourage the more vibrant coloration? (I wouldn’t change lights but would be willing to try different mix of spectrums if important for coloration; my AI’s are running mostly UV/Violets, with some royal and blue and very minimal, e.g. <5%, green, red and white)
My tank is 10 months old, started from dry rock and dry sand. Phosphates were high (~.4ppm) when I added the anemone to the tank initially and I’ve been working on getting it down slowly over time with Chemipure Elite and was at .2-.3 for most of the time this anemone has been in my tank. Current parameters below:
Temp: 77.8
Salinity: 35ppt
Phosphate: .13
Nitrate: 5.6
Calcium: 415
Magnesium: 1395-1410
Alk: 7-7.15
I’ve historically noticed the anemone is most spread out / puffy / bubbly when the water is extra dirty (e.g. after missing one or two weekly water changes while traveling) and it’s basically never not extended / bubbly during the day. I typically do a ~10gal water change every week and do not feed the anemone at all but we feed the tank fairly heavily for our fish (frozen mysis and brine).
