Anemone rescue?

I posted about two weeks ago about adding a maxi mini carpet anemone to my tank and was told to leave it alone for a few weeks (which I've been doing). He looked great for the first week!

However, he's sunk further into the hole he hid himself in, and from what I can see, is starting to turn white.

At what point do I go on a rescue mission? I'm completely new to anemones and don't want to screw anything up, but I'd also really like to not have him die and wipe out the tank.

Is the hole in which it has retracted in a a rock?

If it is, I'd say remove the entire rock and put it in a quarantine tank. If it is dying, you don't want it to do so in its main tank.

They will moved to a desired location, sometimes hidden. Your only recourse is to fish that rock out with the nem and place it in an area of low to moderate flow.

He's hidden himself in one of the holes in the large main piece of rock - moving him out would mean taking out half of the rockscape in the tank. Totally willing to do that if it's the only option, but if there are any other ideas, I'm all ears.
