I completely disagree with some of what your saying just because there is a different bta than you never seen before that doesnt mean it doesnt exsist these are all top shelf bta's I picked out 10 from over 100 of them I have been doing this along time and know when things are bleached. Here are a couple others I have

I wouldnt say these are bleached I would say they are pretty darn sweet

Tyrell, your anemones would look truer to their red color under less white/yellow lightining.
Mid west i have seen these anemones before MANY times green with purple tips. Not a big deal but they will get darker with feeding and TLC. Sorry they are slightly bleached.
Collection of anemones is the main cause of death. Its not easy to pry them off a reef and ship them around the world. They get stressed easily and loss zooxanthella. Even if its slight loss of zooxanthella it will show up in their color being lighter and translucent.
I forgot number 4 on the list.
4. SPLITTING is not a sign of a healthy anemone. The ability to heal from a split is a sign of a healthy anemone. Splitting/cloning is a reaction to stress and it requires alot of energy to rip yourself in two. It is easier to survive as two then it is as one.

I would think that splitting is a form of reproduction, and therefore, would need to be fairly healthy and energized to reproduce. Just a thought.
Splitting is due to many things,it is hardly never due to being healthy,99% of the time,Im going to be WILLING to put money on it,that is splits because of stress.
And do let me add that not all Bubble Tip anemones will split.Im sure Broncos will stand beside me on this.There are 2 genders of BTA's.Male and femal.Very rarly will you see a female split.These are the ones who get very large and 15+ inches,males are generally smaller and under 8 inches or so.
I would love to find the artical if there is any interest in this...

Splitting is a form of reproductions, IN OUR TANKS. In nature, it's VERY uncommon for an anemone to split and it's almost always caused by stress. It's more of a survival mechanism, from some type of stressor, than a reproduction mechanism.
Im not going to argue on splitting of anemones.But I will give my opinion since some information is contradicting on this.Im going to start from the beginning:
There are 2 species of anemones who are known,common splitters that are hosting species.Entacmaea quadricolor,and Heteractis magnifica.Both of these are seen in colony form in the wild.This is caused by splitting over a period of time,similer as to what happened in my friend's tank.Mobert who I know from another fourm has a huge tank,filled with BTA's.I guess you could say BTA's are a colony anemone to a point.
With that being said,the huge colonies of anemones we see in the wild are ALMOST GENERALLY all male.There is plenty of facts to support this concept aswell.A goup of Marine Bio's were studying a reef,and had it taped off,they came there to the location on a daily basis and one day as they arrived,there was a large,Magnifica anemone that had never been there.There the theory is that the large mag was a female that had left its colony of males to further produce eggs so that the colony of males near buy could fertilize the eggs the female realeases.
There is a ton of other information on this,and Im going to emal my friend on this here in a few minuets...but,splitting isnt a form of reproduction in our tanks,its a form of stress and a way they survive...same thing in the wild.Very rarly will you see a healthy BTA split for no reason.

Very interesting guys. Its amazing to me that they split due to stress rather than reproduction. I wish I could split when I get stressed so I could get more done :) haha
Anyway, keep up the information, its great to learn new stuff even after being in the hobby for 6+ years.

Wow. You learn something new every day! I had never heard that anemones were gender specific. I would definitely appreciate seeing some scientific literature on this.

Austin right on point. Some release sperm and some release eggs. I have seen a sperm cloud and a seen a female bubbletip release little orange yellow balls. Anemones start out life just like any of other coral during a mass spawning.
The amount of energy used to split is to great to be considered a means of reproduction, the animal ripes its body in two to raises its chances of survival.
Guys im not doing this to put a vendor through the coals, im doing this because i acutally have a alot of respect for the ocean and what our hobby does to it. Midwest the anemones are sweet but they will def darken up.
I want people to know and be informed.
A bleached anemone can live and come back, but alot of anemones dont make it. Naturally the color in their tentacles shouldnt be light, it should be dark and non translucent. These animals are Very Delicate.

Really old post but good to know, just stumbled on this thread trying to look up a picture to show the gf. It was the same price either way at the lfs and the one they claimed was a watermelon had better color than the greens to start with.
Was actually after a rose bubble tip anemone but they didn’t have any. So decided to start with a green or watermelon. Whichever color it ends up as long as it’s healthy in the end is all I’m concerned about.
