Angler in a 13.5 gallon?

Hey y’all, I plan on upgrading my reef to a 31 gallon here soon. I’d love to turn my current 13.5 gallon into a frag tank with an interesting specimen inside… an anglerfish! I’ve been obsessed with them since I’ve been 4, and I think they are awesome! But I was just wondering if they could comfortably live in a 13.5 gallon as the only fish? Of course I’d get a CUC and all that. If it cannot fit inside the tank it’s all good!

Yea, the maculatus species can live in a 13.5g as it doesn’t move much.

Just be prepared to feed it live food

The usual recommendation for an angler tank size is 20 gallons. And 13.5 is a little on the low end. I would suggest getting a 20+ gallon tank as it is ideal for a smaller angler species like a Wartskin angler. It kind of depends on what species you plan on getting though.

I will say that some anglers move more than others, it varies between individuals. My angler tends to swim and move around the tank constantly, whether food is available or not. Maybe a 13.5 gallon is suitable, but I don’t have enough experience to tell you for sure.

Yeah I agree with this greatly every meal is a dent in the wallet for sure

Yea I’ve seen marine ghost shrimps for sale for cheap as well years ago, but not sure how to source those anymore.

That’s very decent. As long as you can make sure to source the shrimps for the long term I’d say go for it.

I wouldn’t set up a tank for the ghost shrimps though as they are cannibalistic.

Ah I see, that’s no problem! And I really don’t mind at all, it’s about a 15 minute drive :)
