another powerhead question.....suggestions

i'm highly considering swapping out my existing gyre. I've been looking at the other gyres on the market as well as the powerhead. I've looked at MP40's, and the new NERO's.
I used to have Hydor Powerheads in my last tank, and swapped those out for the Maxspect Gyres. I think I will try an improved powerhead this time around and see if I have better results. Not excited about the performance anymore.

I do notice that there really isn't a powerhead option out there that gets rave reviews. They all seem to fall in the 3-4 out of 5 star range. All seem to have the same issues....noisy, fail after a number of months, etc etc. For the price of these things, you'd expect them to last longer and be more dependable.

with that, can anyone give any feedback or suggestions? The NERO 7's are appealing.
I have an 80 gallon cube. I'd like to have two powerheads, one at each end (left and right). with one pushing flow at the front of the tank, and the second blowing the back of the tank.

I have had opposing mp40s on my 110 for years at least 7. Minimal maintenance. Maybe once every 6months to a year if that. They are definitely not silent and produce an audible whirring but are exceedingly reliable. The wet side has displaced maybe once in that time period as well and was probably my fault.
My new tank went with icecap 4ks. Completely silent though can’t speak to durability yet.

I like the Tunze turbelle series. I have Sicce xstream too but they seem a little weak.

If your goal is reliability, it is hard to beat Tunze. They are not the newest or fanciest, but they pump water consistently and reliably for many years. I would look at the 6105s. Over the years I have found that I am frustrated with pumps that need constant service and replacement parts and once I set up the pump programming, I don't touch it for a very long time. The Tunzes are a great workhorse pump.

Tunze and be done. Most reliable on the market and it’s not close. I haven’t had one Tunze ever fail in 20 years. I use them for years and end up selling them at some point. I have 2 6015 that are over 10 years old in my care plus they were a couple years old when I bought them. They mix my new water and have been abused. Still running strong like a champ

I agree Tunze are very durable and have plenty of flow. I have a Nero 5 on my 80 cube and its been great for over a year I think I have only cleaned it once. I did have an issue with the app though it kept resetting the time and date to dec 31 1970 new york time zone for some reason, it seems to have stopped doing that now though.

Oh! I am glad someone kinda brought this back up. After the 3rd time of my Nero doing that I called AI their tech line was very helpful and they thought it was the controller, so they sent me a new Nero took like 2 days to get it. That was not the issue it was the fact that the power flickered and it lost wifi connection. That was a tree rubbing on some lines somewhere on the grid and my wifi extender not booting back up correctly.

I really like the slim profile of the nero's.
if I get (2) Nero 3's, I think that would be best suited for my tank size.
I assume the flow can be adjusted on the Nero Powerheads.

I just wish there were more options for splitting up the wet side and dry side like ecotech is doing. I have a euro brace and any wires inside my tank makes routing ugly.

The Panta Rhei surge looks interesting. But a bit too costly unless 1 would be enough for a 150+ display.

Yes they are adjustable in many ways. You can change the flow type and volume also if in a pulse mode the frequency of the pulses.

I had a maxspect gyre an mp10 and mp40 for years a decade ago. No issues other than replacing wet side once on the mp40, ceramic shaft broke. I liked them more than the gyre for no real reason even if a little noisier. Just liked the flow pattern and options and appearance better i guess. They were all the older “dumb” ones with no Wi-Fi or apps or anything so not sure on any reliability issues with the new smart ones.
