Another thread about cyano...

Sorry to create another thread about a cyano problem, but I've got one myself and none of the remedies/explanations I've found elsewhere seem to resolve/explain my situation.

My tank is 55g with a 30g sump with refugium. It's pretty lightly stocked, with only 2 bangais and 1 little chromis. Corals are leathers, birdsnest, acans, montis, and a crocea clam. The tanks about 10 months old.

My light cycle is 4 T5 HO, 2 actinic and 2 10k. The actinic run from 10 am to 10 pm and the 10k from noon to 8. I've got two powerheads, one 550 GPH and one 950. I always use RO/DI water for top-offs and water changes and only feed twice a week.

The cyano has been there for a month or two. I vacuum it out as best I can but it's always back within a couple days.

Any suggestions? Thanks! Oh, and I swear the rockwork usually looks better... I've got some bleaching on the patio after a stubborn hair algae problem.

Since the cyano isn't on the rocks, I think the issue is more a low flow area on the sandbed, which is common. You can try increasing the flow in those spots or buying something that will stir your sandbed. I am sure others will chime in with chemical options in a bit, but I prefer to avoid any chemical I don't have to use. GL.

Would mini power heads do the trick? I'd rather have a biological solution than another plug-in one, but the 8 or so nassarius snails I've got don't seem to be making much of a difference.

You need at least twice as much flow as you have on there now!

I said 950 and 550 in my original post, but it's actually 1050 and 750 from the koralias and then a little extra from the sump return. Still not adequate flow? What would you recommend?

I would add another power head if you can. And also think about a sand sifting star. They do a great job

Yeah you could probably use a little more flow in the tank, but it depends on the type of coral you are keeping. More SPS = more flow, more softies and LPS = medium/lower flow. If your tank seems to be doing well with only a little cyano issue, then I wouldn't worry too much about upgrading powerheads.
