Anthias Recommendations.

My wife and I are setting up a 125g mixed reef. We love the Anthias for the striking colors, body shape and schooling with others.
We'd like to have something like 6 or more, but none that are very highly priced. Please give us your recommendations including how many of males & females etc.

Disbar and lyertail anthias are both fairly hardy options. I think the best option is to get a group of 5-6 females and let the dominant one transition to the male.

i would recommend lyretail anthias also i had a really nice one would swim all over the tank and wasnt aggressive then my tank got marine velvet

Another vote for the Lyretail. I only have one (for now) but it has been a gorgeous addition to the tank and very hardy. Here is my female Lyretail Anthias:

I have a pink squared anthias and it is a very attractive and cool fish.

I have 2 females and 1 male lyretails and they are beautiful fish. Not sure why people recommend odd numbers.

I would spend the extra 5 bucks each and get the carberryi, those and sunset anthias are my favorite large schooling of the fairy prices anthias. If your looking for ones that get larger, and more money, get the bimaculatus

Easy ones! Bartlett and Lyretails....they eat and swim In the open. Others...pains in the rear.

I vote lyretail as well. I introduced 1 male into my tank 3 weeks ago and is one of my favorites . Very active free swimmer .I will probably get a couple of females down the road .

+1 on P. squamipinnis (aka Lyretails, although I prefer the common name "Scalefin"). They are super easy to keep IME. Just get more than you think you will need, as they can get pretty aggressive with each other when establishing their dominance hierarchy.

i actually have 2 carberryi anthias coming gonna QT them and put them in my DT after im done with this fallow period

I like Bimacs. I tried ignitus but the clown killed them. Bimacs are on the feisty side. Only the pair left; the middle sized female was killed early on. They spawn all the time.

Beautiful colors. Which species are the clowns that are murderers ?
Were they protecting their host or babies ?

Reviving this thread. I'm interested in incorporating some anthias in my 180 to offset the tang activity (I'd like to some more open water swimming).

I do travel for work and would like something that would eventually migrate to either pellet or flake.

I have a single lyrletail (the others didn't make it through qt) in my office tank, so I was looking to do something different at home.

I guess it would depend on how much time you have to get them converted to pellet (assuming you're going to put them on an autofeeder). Once converted, I have had great luck with bimaculatus anthias. They're beautiful fish with the same great personalities as lyretails and are pretty hardy. I actually think I like the coloring better with the bimacs, Especially the males! They're stunning!
