any computer experts? need some help please

hey all can anyone here help me figure out whats up with my laptop? I have a gateway NV53A that recently I've had some trouble with
I have internet with ATT&T & have the highest speed they offer & don't seem to have any problem with my droid phone when using it just the laptop
everything will be just fine then suddenly it will simply pause if I don't do anything several minutes later things will resume I thought it was something in the internet but even when I disconnect it I can't use my laptop programs it's almost like it has to reset itself or something I have about zero computer knowledge & really can't affort the cost of taking it to a professional so any help or suggestions (that are easy to do) would be of a great help cause it is driving me crazy it's about 1 1/2 years old if that is of any help

Have you done any Windows Updates? Does the problem happen even after you restart the computer? Those two things alone take care of a huge number problems.

What Operating system are you running? Anti virus?

yes it happens after I restart it. the anti virus is thru Charter. where do I find what the operating system is? my daughter downloaded chrome because she said she had better luck with that & thought it would solve the problem it didn't. I was told not to download any "cleaning" program etc unless it was from a trusted site Acro76 do you fully trust that site?? I tried using speed up a slow windows computer for free from wikihow you don't download it just follow the recommended steps but sadly I couldn't figure it out it said go to "my computer" but I couldn't even find that I know less about this computer than I do about a car I did try several things like emptying the recycle bin & defragmentating it but that didn't help I really wish they would just put in a button that said "fix me"
