Good evening, I’m looking for anyone who has attempted to breed puffers, or kept 2 or more of the same type of puffers successfully. Mainly I want to know if anyone has observed spawning or courtship behavior.
I have 2 blue spot puffers, and I’m trying to determine if they are make and female. There is a distinct size and color difference, and I can’t tell if it’s sexual dimorphism or if one is younger/weaker.
This one is darker bodied, thicker/fuller looking, and has more iridescent blue spots. It has a more pronounced black spot on its back than the other. This one is very active, eats well, and is dominant currently.
This one is lighter, not quite pale, but lighter. It’s a little thin looking too, but it’s very active, and eats well. This one was a little more timid of the two, and is the subordinate currently.
They spend much of their time on opposite sides of the tank, and when the larger one gets close the smaller one will move to the opposite side, but only one chase of about a foot-worth of tank has been witnessed. The larger one will sometimes follow the smaller, but doesn’t chase, it looks rather intent to me, like a buck tailing a doe that isn’t ready to breed yet. They have recently started swimming in the same side of the tank together, eating and paying no mind to the other. If I drop a single clam in the larger one will take ownership of it, but if I drop 2, they both have their own no problem. Anyone have experience on this?
