Researchers used coral skeleton "pins" ( I am assuming that means they made pin like sections from it?) to regenerate bone in both birds, animals and HUMANS. Maybe some one has already posted this? Its a fairly old article.
I stumbled on it while searching for proper Vitamin C dosages per tank volume today ( of which I found NADA ! )

a guy that works with my mother is having an fake eye put in. they use a piece of coral in the back so that nerves or muscles grow into it so that maybe he will get some movement to the eye.
 
3.2 years ago, when my neice was 10 months old, she had to have her eye removed. They used the coral to make a stump for a fake eye. It is pretty amazing. They sewed the muscles to the coral stump and it moves just like a real eye. If she looks left, the fake eye looks left.
