I am completely new to plumbing beyond running straight pvc down to a sump. I need to run plumbing from my living room where I'm setting up an in wall reef to the opposite side of the house in the basement where I'll have my sump and fish room. I understand I'll need a fair head height but the approx 16 ft vertical run across the room is that counted the same as horizontal head?

I will only need max three 90 degree elbows but it's going to be a long run of pipe along the basement ceiling. Any tips on preparing are appreciated I have months to plan and possibly build the plumbing before buying the tank (waiting for black Friday). But as I said I have zero experience with this so even basic tips are appreciated.

Horizontal piping does not add to head in an equal fashion like vertical piping, but it does add frictional losses which can be considerable depending on the diameter of the pipe and the flow rate.

I think the biggest challenge will be the overflow drain line with the long horizontal run. You have to allow entrapped air to escape back up to the overflow box or you will get unstable flows. Slopping the line continuously downward can accomplish this or alternatively massively oversizing the horizontal line (2" or greater) so the air can easily flow back against the liquid flow and not accumulate in the drain line. You can also add some air release open ended standpipes along the horizontal run, but this may be impractical if the line is running along the ceiling. Ideally these would extend above the top of your tank so that liquid could never discharge out the top if the downstream piping became restricted.

I would recommend locating the full siphon gate valve at the end of the line just before it enters the sump rather than under the tank to prevent air from building up under the valve and causing unstable flow
