It is an algae. It actually has a calcium-based structure. Specifically, Neomeris annulata.
I agree! Sometimes, it dies out. Rarely, it goes invasive and overgrows your rockwork. It is often called Spindleweed, Caterpillar algae, and Finger algae, though I enjoy calling it Alien fingers. It is incredibly rare in the U.S. hobby (maybe you could frag “heads” from the mother colony and sell them if the algae grows).
