Welcome!!!
I agree! Sometimes, it dies out. Rarely, it goes invasive and overgrows your rockwork. It is often called Spindleweed, Caterpillar algae, and Finger algae, though I enjoy calling it Alien fingers. It is incredibly rare in the U.S. hobby (maybe you could frag “heads” from the mother colony and sell them if the algae grows). It is an algae. It actually has a calcium-based structure. Specifically, Neomeris annulata.
Welcome!
