Biggest mistake I made keeping cichlids is not having a sump. Great place to keep plants to reduce excessive nitrate and filter socks to clean all the gravel and substrate they dig up.

Been thinking about adding a sump instead of canister filters for my turtle/cichlid tank. The turtles eat any plant I try to put in there and generate a lot of waste so my nitrates are always high.
