I don't trust my new apex jr temperature probe. For one thing, it says my tank is 82°F but it doesn't feel that warm, and my old ink bird thermostat, my digital meat thermometer, and my heater say it's 77-78°F. I also put the thermometer in ice water and it reads 41-42°F, which is almost 10°F higher than what I would expect.

I know I can recalibrate it. But I'm not sure what thermometer to use for that. Do I need to buy a specially calibrated one? Can I just calibrated it in ice water at 32°F?

It should come out of the box with accuracy at least within a degree or two of the real temperature. This seems to be at least 5°F off, possibly more.

You would need to pick up a NIST certified thermostat to calibrate. Also keep in mind most hobbiest grade equipment can have a accuracy range of up to +/-4⁰. So that could certainly skew the results.

In your case I would try to keep an eye that it is reading consistently and trying calibrating using the average temp across a few thermometers.
