I am essentially trying to complete step #3 in the manual, but I swear this piece is way too long. I came across a thread that said it "appears" too long, but comparing their pictures to mine, I think my "D" piece is too long for my stand.

Any suggestions?

You may need to adjust the tension on other pieces to allow it all to fit properly. If it still doesn't fit I would get in contact with Innovative Marine. This is the first I have heard of these stands having this sort of issue.

At the 1:15 mark, you can see how easily the piece appears to slide in, but in my second picture you will see that it's going to require some serious flexing it to get it in there

It fits you just have to loosen the other pieces as said above
Trust me I thought the same thing when I put mines together
