I've been thinking about changing mine to just a center island that goes from sandbed to about 3" from the top of the water

And while you're at it, catch that 6 line.:D

I do not like your aquascape. The collection of rock on the right looks fantastic because of the large loop as well as the gaps between the rock. This I would keep for sure. The collection of rock on the left is just an ugly pile of rock. The next problem is that the rock clusters are the same size. In a minimalist tank, the right side structure would work best positioned a little more to the left with the left structure considerably smaller.

Your aquascape has a balanced and neutral look to it. You should follow the artistic Rule of Third for a more pleasing look.

Yea those are pretty.... I had originally intended to do a two island much like Bart, but I had a substancial amount of rock and could not stop adding..... ended up with an undulating rock wall with lots of caves. Remember though.. Less rockwork means less places for Coral. I laid mine out to maximize coral space if at all possible.

I'm completely happy with my aquascaping as of now.The only thing I am about to change is the height of some of my rock work. I have some dry rock that has been curing in a bucket in the garage for about 3 weeks now. I plan on building up the right side of my tank to where it is only a few inches from the top. And with a 27" tall tank, that's going to look sweet! :)

I was just thinking how in this video that you could actually use this type of scape and it be something similar to nature.

While I do not like a tank with to much rock in it, Having rock that reaches to the top of the tank is a big bonus. I would like to just get all new base rock for my 20G and sorta start it over just so I can get rock in a way that it forms table shapes. The tops being broad and close to the water surface. The bases of the rocks being smaller with the shade creating a darker and more secure feeling for the animals living down there. However, just simply stacking rocks in a way I liked in one tank with the aim being to go vertical, It turned out to be one of my favorite looking tanks.

This is how my 36g display is but except the tank is to tall. The open water at the top just gives an empty feeling. If you go vertical and worry about coral growing out of the water then simply go with a short coral. Depending on lighting, there are many types of Palys that could look great near the waterline. If you are going to have any xenia then it should be at the highest point witch will make it stay more compact and spread less.

it is funny I still have the rock work from when i set it up in the middle of the night after driving down here from Akron OH in the middle of the night. I started at 1:30 and finished by 3am with my whole setup. needless to say I despreately need to re-do my rock setup. I am really looking forward to re-working my setup. One problem with xenia is that it can spread I have seen a tank where the only xenia is on one side of the glass it starts at the bottom and grows up. It is a really cool look actually the entire wall moves. He keeps it cleaned off a few inches below his MP40 on that side of the tank.
