Are breather bags worth the extra cost? Do these benefit corals in anyway or are they primarily used for fish? And finally, what are the drawbacks of using such bags?

Fish and certain inverts but not for corals, I personally don't think they are needed if shipping conditions are right and there is enough water and oxygen in the bags used.

No, they cost to much andare to thin. I ship a lot of 3"-6" discus and have tried them twice. Failed both times. Will stick with my heavy walled bags with air and bag buddies!!
