Are Live sales really a sale?

So I have to start this by saying that I don't think this applies to all retailers here on R2R. I typically don't take part in Live Sales (I have better things to do then continue to hit refresh) but I know some people love them! There was one retailer that I used to buy from during his sales until I got "done dirty". Maybe it's just me? I don't see many of these corals being a good deal at all! You can't tell me anyone would pay $90 for a frag of bubble gum digi, yet that's the "retail price" shown. So the live sale price of 49.99 is really just a true retail price. Might be a few dollars off depending on what part of the country you're from. I'm a buyer for one of the top retailers in the world and there are actually laws in California that keep you from being able to do these types of things. I'm not trying to get political.... really if peopme enjoy them, fantastic! It seems if more of these small business were willing to make fast dimes instead of slow quarters, it would be better for everyone. Retailer and consumer. I suppose it's one less keyboard sold (no F5 refresh) and one less sniper for all you live salers!

Good points! Ive always thought that about any sale. Trying to create demand. Look at the madness on black Friday. A few years ago I bought a gift for 24.99 the day before Thanksgiving. I swear that I was at the aame store black Friday and it was on "sale" for 29.99 buyer beware! Lol

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Just depends, but generally there are some good deals to find in most live sales here on R2R!

It is the same with any "special" sale. You have to know normal prices, and regular sale prices to see if there is really a good deal.

I agree with u that some live sales are rubbish but some are pretty good. One vendor in particular I see some outrageous prices on the website and scratch my head on how people say they r one of the best. Then the live sale comes and those same pieces are drastically discounted but they just come down to the average price everyone else sells them for. Don’t get me wrong I bought from this vendor before and the frags were great but when u charge 100 plus for a one headed green hammer. U get the point. No bueno

For me, the fraghouse sales are a good spot to get cheaper corals that aren’t readily available near me. The WWC live sales are really just a way to get cheaper shipping for the eBay auctions that will end on Monday. Those are the only ones I have messed with.

I get the whole supply and demand piece too. It is tough with overhead on wages and these dang millennials that don't want to work! :)

I 2nd @FraghouseCorals , his normal prices are cheap and his sales prices are even better, he doesn't inflate his prices so his sale prices look good.

I think they’re more of a “Live For Sale”, vs “Live On Sale”. That said, I don’t participate in them. I prefer to take my time and make thoughtful informed decisions when it comes to live additions to my tank.

This has to be the 5th or 6th thread I have seen like this in the past couple of weeks. Why has this become such an issue all of the sudden?

I haven't participated in a live sale for a few years. The constant refresh and amount of hours have just gotten to be too much for me these days. There are a few good deals here and there but I can't do these 12 hrs or more stints anymore. More recently, there was a 20% off sale on a site and then a 40% off weekend clearance sale coming. I looked at the site and saw a few things I would be interested in purchasing during the weekend sale. I was very disappointed and disheartened to see the items which were $ 75 increased to $ 100 for the 40% off. So basically, buying at 20% off ($ 15) was the same as buying at 40% off ($ 40). Net price was still $ 60. Since then, I much prefer to try and trade or purchase from some of my local hobbyists or LFS.

I think some of us would just rather stop all of the smoke and mirrors. That is why this hobby is becoming more and more distant. It used to be that you knew when Tyree put his stamp on something it would be crazy expensive for a while...look and sunset monti. Then if you could hold out you knew it would be affordable. These days you are tied into pre paying for shipping hoping you get 2 or 3 corals you wanted because you know you're going to buy the green stylo at 24.99 just to fill the box. I have moved all of my coral money to either other reefers or guys like Adam or Boom Corals. Just give me the price or I'm great with saying "heres 300 bucks, make me a pack". Again, it's like all things. If more people didnt purchase from them the retailers wouldnt do them. Just don't tell me it's on sale and then mark it up to offset the discount. That's dirty pool!
