Are pride and hard work dead?

From the Google:
Generic medications must contain the exact same active ingredients as the brand name and are chemically equivalent. A brand-name drug and its generic version must have the same active ingredient, dosage, safety, strength, usage directions, quality, performance and intended use. Brand-name firms are linked to an estimated 50% of generic drug production. They frequently make generic copies of their own or other brand-name drugs, then sell them with a generic name.

Presumably, the OEM went through the process of learning how to make it and really knows their stuff - all the ins and outs.

What you hope when you go generic is that also made by that company and they don't screw up making the drug.

Yes there is a standard in that case, but that does not mean all manufacturers are created equal. Do they take shortcuts in packaging? Do they have the same levels of quality control? There are many questions.

Same in most industries where knockoffs are rampant. It just so happens there is a humanitarian argument and a degree of oversight in the case of medications.

Friend of mine works for a major injection molding company in the US and I contract work out to one in Belgium. Both tried to outsource production to Asia and wound up bringing it all back within 2 years. The quality wasn't there. You can only expect someone being paid next to nothing to put only so much effort into something.

The people and companies who can afford to design to that "spec" are going to kick our butts every single day on that basis.

It's bad.

LOL, I get your point, but an HDMI cable is a standard, like USB. The argument here is that Maxspect has created a product that is unique enough that they have the exclusive right to produce a pump in that style. Others agree, and don't care cause they want it cheaper, while even others think that they haven't really created anything that didn't already exist because squirrel cages have been used forever to move air. I am not a patent lawyer, but I imagine that there aren't enough original ideas here to keep someone from producing a pump in the "style" of a centrifugal blower. I doubt they can get a patent for producing a blower style fan, since everyone already uses them. They can probably get them for the name, the style of mounting bracket, or some other visual similarity, but that would be easy enough to change to make it not violate.
I used to have a hair dryer that had that type of squirrel cage used to blow air - I believe in the late 70s.

Agreed, HDMI is a standard. What if there were only one place to get the cables? I read here that someone said "Competition is a bad thing". I wonder if everyone here that are in favor of MAP pricing would or have purchased the expensive, shiny HDMI cables at big box stores for $100 when a similar cable can be had on amazon for $6. There is actually a company in the USA that makes these cables - Bluejeanscable - and they are even sold on amazon. A 6 foot cable does cost around $24. FWIW, I didn't know about the company before today when this thread provoked thought. I guess nobody stole a patent, but they are making the same thing - with quality standards and engineering data about their products for customers to see.

Apples and oranges.

You're comparing a boutique item that may sell only hundreds vs a purposefully standardized commodity product that will sell in the millions, or more, for the lowest price possible. That is the HDMI device-makers intention.

Anyone remember how much a quality SCSI cable used to be?

That's your apples:apples comparison.

That was kinda my point. HDMI was created as an open standard that all manufacturers could use so that all the devices would be connectable to other devices from other manufacturers. They were intentionally designed to be used by produced by everyone.

Some American made products also can be of poor quality. I love guns and there's an American gun company and just the speaking of the name makes people cringe just because of the "Point that their prices aren't Hi ". Gun people know who I'm talking about.

Without a doubt they can be. Garbage in, garbage out.

You don't, I was being a dick. Water under the bridge.

Well sure, but who makes a mass produced TRP operator .45 or performance center 8 Rd. 357?

Both are U.S. companies. The TRP runs $1,700 and the 627 runs $1,289. I own both.

Its more like within 80% active ingredient and the mech of delivery in body which cause massive swings in efficacy. And, they can change month over month. For instance, patients with hypothyroidism need to stick with branded because of this, most important geriatric patients and pregnant women.

Medicine generics are not that great.

Fascinating QC info. Do you have any source info?

Very different than what was taught in my pharmacology class and I would like to read up.

We still talking about infringement from a patent or is Wilson drifting a bay?

Their write up seems tight:
"Generic drug" on @Wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generic_drug

A quote:
A generic drug must contain the same active ingredients as the original formulation. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), generic drugs are identical or within an acceptable bioequivalent range to the brand-name counterpart with respect to pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties. By extension, therefore, generics are considered (by the FDA) identical in dose, strength, route of administration, safety, efficacy, and intended use.[4] The FDA's use of the word "identical" is very much a legal interpretation, and is not literal.

That last line is the kicker. [emoji6]

Big Pharma - a whole industry constructed and run by lawyers.

If the product is good, the quality is there, and it does what it says its going to do, with a reasonable price point, there wont be a very profitable market for knock offs. If someones selling something that is totally identical and happens to be cheaper, because they have ripped off the r&d of someone else, then there was not enough r&d done, that's their loss, development should include making the product at reasonable price point.
I'm going to look into these knock off gyre's because i think there unreasonably priced, i almost bought them a while back, and i'm glad i didn't. If the knock off's meet the criteria they'll be going in my tank

on that note brand newish skimz dc skimmer for sale, going back to the coral life,.......until there's a knock off skimz,... actually no i dont even want the skimz knock off

I am just going to stick with the companies that originally made the product and this is why, I just sent my two radions to be fixed by ecotech marine (hardware fix). Not only did they fix them for free and eat the return shipping... They gave me a free fragging tool (bonecutters) which sell for $40 on their website!!!!!!!

Recommend aquamaxx.

Its not unreasonable to expect 5+ years service from these LEDs, the only reason people dont is the technology has progressed so rapidly.

One additional point. For all those conplaining about the controller on a Gyre..i see that as a non issue. With an apex and adapter you can run it on any schedule, at any intensity and it can even be run different schedules of forward and backwards. I run mine 40% for about 40 seconds and 80% for 10 seconds and it doesnt bother my lps much. Every once in a while ill spin it backwards just to clean off the blades.

The controller that came with it is sitting in the box in storage.

I'll never buy another Kessil product gain. Spent $1000 on their AP700 and it has so many bugs its not funny. I coud have spent half that and got the features I wanted. And they would have actually worked. So yes to the little guy.
As for Amazon, living in Canada you wont find any deals on aquarium stuff there. Went to see if I could pick up an Apex ph probe. $125, I almost gagged. I'll visit the LFS any day over using Amazon Ca.
