Are these Encrusted vermetid tubes?

So a few of my Acros have had these weird growths where it looks like a single polyp goes rogue. but it just occurred to me that these might be vermetid tubes gone crazy as the coral trys to encrust over them.

LLooking closely it doesn't seem that there is any polyp at the tip. Should I break them off or see where it goes?
