A couple of Chinese retailers in my place are selling “Captive Bred Goldflake Angelfish” which I’m pretty sure are all from Bali Aquarich as no one else breeds them commercially as far as I know. However, I am not sure if they’re all full blooded A. Xanthopunctatus as some appear to be hybrids between A. Xanthopunctatus and A. Trimaculatus. If they’re indeed hybrids, 1. Are they naturally occurring 2. Are they sterile?

Thanks. They’re all juveniles so it’s not easy for me to tell.

The ones that seem to have the “flake” pattern coming in look full blooded. I bought a juvenile a little bigger than a quarter before they were captive bred and I remember it looking very similar. I believe Bali Aquarich did have some hybrids but that was quite some time ago and probably not a regular offering from them

That’s really cool. Are there any in the pics that you suspect are hybrids or even full blooded Flagfins?

I also wonder if the hybrids are naturally occurring and sterile.
The first two and the second last look like the could potentially be hybrids. More so the second last. Only because it’s flat yellow and looks to be a decent size. None of them I’d suspect are full blood flagfins. The others are no doubt 100% goldflake.

As for natural occurrence, it has happened although obviously not common. It looks like the biggest tell between the hybrid and pure blood Goldflake is that the pure bloods have a black spot on the back near their top fin
