Ash's 400 Gallon Reef

Finally got the skimmer hooked up. I did add extra support so i have 6 legs total now so it will not arch. The other skimmer was not producing constantly getting clogged with vodka slime and other junk.
I love the end results

Just tested 3 things and here is my results. I am going to stop dosing phosphates and let it drop. I only dose it because the vodka drops it to zero quickly and Phosphates is needed if your dosing vodka. Goal is to keep them at a natural level so i hopefully don't have to be a mad scientist. Hopefully the new skimmer and ATS does the job or at least keeps them a reasonable range between waterchanges. id like Nitrate of 10-20ppm and Phosphate 0.06ppm (or above slightly).

My Nitrates last month were 40ppm, I just started using the Hanna Nitrate checker and its really useful since i can get a clear read out and know if its working than guessing if its between 25-50ppm.

Finally got my scrubber hooked up. My nitrates did go back up to 40ppm but could have just be a false reading or a result of the cutting back on vodka or break in period for the skimmer. Now that I got the skimmer and ats working I'll be able to tune the system accordingly.

I turned my mp40 back on last night (turned of when I installed skimmer) and the flow is pretty intense. My ph in the morning was 8.10 so im hoping we have a high a ph moving forward

120 gallon fresh saltwater has been mixing for over a week. Just trying to find the right time to get this water change done right. I could easily drain and fill but want to remove all the crap in the sump and tank.

It's great getting the update, Ash!

I was just scanning my followed threads and pinging anyone who was at 3 weeks or more. I saw your thread and thought, "Not quite 3 weeks but I wonder how things are going for Ash and his helper?"

Hope all is well and you, your son and family have the best upcoming year of your lives, Ash!

Happy New Year GIF

Can anyone advice me how and where I can sell or trade corals? Fb is not aloud and I'm not trying to have my page closed bc I do sell a bunch of household crap my overspending family needs to get rid of.

R2R used to allow it but they charge and I'm not selling more than the monthly fee.

It pains me to throw out frags but im close to trashing corals

Hey Ash... are you a member of any local reefing clubs in NJ?

I see you mentioned FB Marketplace. I don't know how it is monitored but I constantly and consistently see posts for "fake coral", that isn't fake, made by FB members. None of them ever seem to lose their page or ability to post.

Also, there are a number of NJ reefers here. Have you considered befriending any of them?

Hey @Ashish Patel - you never answered any of the questions I posed about your fragging coral issue.

Got some new fish from TSM... 3 Barrett anthias. These were the only remaining fish species I wanted. I love TSM. Your paying a premium for a quality fish... my system probably has all the parasites already but still worried about thing that I've not had like velvet

Hi. Sorry must have missed that. Which issue?
Having a hard time emembering but I think it was what to do with your frags after cutting them.

Well... it's been a rough ride.

We lost power yesterday around 8 PM after a bad thunderstorm. FirstEnergy's outage map showed most of the region out, so I knew this wasn't going to be a quick fix.

I had an EcoTech MP60 on battery backup, but a few months ago I bought a 9,500-watt Generac generator for emergencies. The problem? I never even opened the box and it was sitting on my workbench. weighing 225lb i had to make a plan to remove it.

So there I was in the dark with no generator experience, about two gallons of gas, and one 100-foot extension cord. I figured we'd make it through the night on battery backup and deal with the rest in the morning.

My wife, son, and I slept in the living room, then I sent them to my mother-in-law's house while I stayed behind. I found gas, got the generator off the workbench with a ramp, added oil and fuel, and started it up.

It fired on the first try.

Then the panic started.

Every time I plugged in my return pump, the breaker tripped. My kleins butterflyfish and yellow tang were struggling, my Achilles tang was stressed, and my orange shoulder tang had turned nearly white. It was gut-wrenching and I realize I was procrastinating because all looks fine for 9 hours. but then the ecotech battery back up reduced power and it was a rap!

My neighbor and I tried everything until we finally used the 30-amp adapter that came with the generator. That solved it but wasted almost 45 minutes.. I desperately tried to stir the water on my own but it didnt really help.

I learned that some DC equipment doesn't always play nicely with portable generators, and the proper adapter made all the difference.

Soon the fish looked much better. I went to mother in laws house and Later that evening I realized its going to thunderstorm so I rushed home so I can cover the generator some how.

The tank had climbed to about 79°F, which wasn't terrible. I had already put a fan over it, added fresh Chemi-Pure/carbon, and kept feeding light to avoid extra ammonia.

Then the rain started before I could do anything.

For over an hour I stood outside holding an umbrella over the generator and extension cord connections while lightning flashed around me. Not my smartest move, but I wasn't risking water getting into the electrical setup.

Eventually I rigged a shelter with a broken patio umbrella and some 2x4s. It's ugly, but getting all the cords and generator drenched I worried it would stop working in the middle of the night.

Right now I'm running the return pump and MP60s, closed loop, skimmer with the powerheads aimed near the surface for gas exchange. The fish are improving, and power is projected to come on in 24 hours, which feels like an eternity.

This experience taught me a few important lessons:

This hobby can be rewarding, but situations like this make it incredibly stressful. I am thankful I got the generator because If I didn't have it everything would be dead.

I hope everyone else effected by the storms is okay. I'll keep updating

Sitting without power as well. Had to buy another generator because the big one I recently bought to power the house (50A) kept tripping no matter which outlets we used (thankfully it'll be warrantied). Tested everything to realize it's definitely the generator. Had to use 30A adapter so the fridge wouldn't keep tripping the 20A GFCI circuits. Tank is running with return pump and a tunze 6255 and a small moon light to try and reduce respiration. Hoping for power restoration by tonight.

Update: got power back and everything doing well. Lesson: testing the generator (multiple times) doesn't always mean it will work when you actually need it to work. D'oh! 😅 Thankfully the backup carried us through.
