No, the first 1 catches most of the big stuff. Its 400 microns and wont clog for over a month easily.
The 2 open ones allow pods to go to the sump.
I control po4 with gfo, you can see it on top of the sock chamber.
I control no3 with vodka.
I also run 2 over size skimmers on this system.
A 28" LifeReef venturi in chamber 1 and a Tunze 9430dc in the return running ozone.
Felt socks will backup and overflow, this is why I run 400 mesh.
Anyway just the way I run this system currently.
Vodka??

Good to know about felt socks! I'm still deciding on what to fill those slots with. What would you say to 1st is the roller and 2+3 are carbon and other things of that nature? (What else is there?)

I carbon dose vodka to keep no3 <5. Running around 2-3 right now.
Currently dosing 6ml a day by hand.

That would work.
Carbon, gfo in the other 2 works.
I only run carbon because I run ozone.

If you run a fuge you may want to run the last 2 holes open until you get a good population going.

Just put a skinny ato container between the stand and wall. Hide it behind the stand I have a 15 gallon advanced acrylics ( purchased in 2019) behind my stand. When you setup your tank you will need to leave room behind the stand anyways.

I'll get something from advanced acrylic!

What kind of ATO systems is everyone running. Both Tunze and Red Sea seem to have very mixed reputations.

Ho much depth do you have?
Red Sea reefcan? OR something custum made to fit?

I have the reef can 18 in my IM NUVO stand . It sits against the door

Interesting about just running 1 of the 3 slots for filtration. In a video I watched, the guy who fit those rollers was only using 2 and capped off the 3rd. So just one is enough to take all the water, no backups? And you use the 1st one?

One thing I've wondered about the socks is, unless one washes them every day, that detritus just stays in there polluting things for a while, no? That's why the roller seems like a good idea to me, it removes the solid waste regularly. At least that's how it seems to me in theory.
Many run no mechanical filtration. My IM20 only gets a little floss when I'm scraping the glass or blowing rocks off and my N and P are often 0 with no skimmer. My 330g I run 200 micron socks and usually let them overflow but my N and P levels in that tank would scare many lol but I don't have any visible algae. I do run a reefmat in my SPS tank but I feel it stripped the water when I first started running it so would would shut it down at night. A couple of years later my N and P levels are always detectable so I leave it run 24/7 now. IME sometimes over filtering is worse than not filtering but it depends on the individual tank and the reefers acceptable nutrients level.
Many people preach low N and P to prevent nuisance algae but my experience has been the opposite and my low nutrient tanks are always the ones with algae. I have none in my tank which tested NO3 44.7 and PO4 0.45 yesterday.

I'll be setting up an IM 170 system, will use their gigantic sump as well. There's not much room left inside the cabinet for an ATO. I asked IM directly and they said "Hey find something that's 5.5'' wide to fit between the sump and the door." I'm looking around and... the pickings are slim. There was one, but it's only 5 gallons. Does anyone know of anything OR suggestions for something I can use as a sort of DYI?

Thanks!
Do you have a basement or crawlspace? I am in the process of running lines under the living space from the laundry room to the living room. You could even go through the attic if you get creative and have proper valving and pumps.

If you don't have a budget the Advance Acrylics have a narrow ATO reservoirs they have a 5x24x24 (12Gallon), but they do custom work too a little pricey for a water container IMO. If you do have a budget then go with something next to the tank I use a 15gallon aquarium from petco inside an ikea cabinet to hide it.

I am seeing very thin water containers around probably 3" wide, if I see it online I will link it but I know they exist.
