I just don't understand why ATO Reservoirs are so dang expensive. Seriously??!!!! All they are, essentially, is a small acrylic aquarium. You can go to any major bigbox store and buy an acrylic 5 gallon aquarium for under $40. But you slap that some box with a label that says "ATO Reservoir" and all of a sudden they expect you to pay 3 times as much. Just look on BRS or any other online aquarium supply store and you can't find a 5 gallon ATO Reservoir for less than $100.

Can somebody please tell me why this is? I have my own hunch: People (like me) don't like the "look" of a 5-gallon bucket next to or under their DT, so they are willing to fork over the $$ just for esthetics. If I knew how to glue (or weld, actually) acrylic together reliably I would just make my own. Does anyone have any solutions for a cheap ATO reservoir, that isn't a 5 gallon bucket. I actually have a couple of Marineland 5 g Portrait tanks, but the are AIO and have a rear chamber, plus they don't "look" like an ATO reservoir.

Okay...vent session over.

I plan to get a 15 gallon tank during petco's $1 a gallon sale for my ATO reservoir. It's gonna be inside the cabinet so no one will see anyways. Will make my own top to prevent evaporation.

I searched for an acrylic "box" that fit my size requirements under my tank. I wanted something that could sit on a shelf above my sump. I ended up with an acrylic file folder storage that holds about 4 gallons.

there are some things in this hobby that we just get killed over.. ATO tank is a good example. $1k for a protein skimmer is another example.. algae scrubbers... salt, sand... the list goes on. there are just not enough players in the market willing to disrupt it. China tries (eg. crap on amazon and ebay, but many of them also use low quality parts.. which is a shame.. because for an extra $5 they could sell a bullet proof product).

I have a 29g tank under my tank that I divided in half with a piece of glass. 1/2 ATO and 1/2 refugium that gravity drains back into my sump. The only thing I don't like is that I get a lot of light spill over into my ato reservoir.

I got two 2-1/2 gallon plastic jugs from Amazon. Drilled the cap in two places, used a rubber grommet around the cord from ACE’s Hardware Drawers. 2-1/2 gallons is my safe limit on what I would want dumped into my 65 gallon, in case something goes wrong. When I go on vacation, I do tandem two together, after cleaning the optical sensor.
