Auto water change and Sand Cleaning

How do you guys with an auto water change go about cleaning your sandbed?

Blast it with a turkey baster every so often. Less often get in there and rake it around a bit to turn some over. I'm adding more sand sifters to my CUC, either a cucumber or a conch soon.

I do the exact thing even though am BB, blast the rocks with a baster and use it to pick up detritus I put into the overflow to be caught by the sock.
