Hey Mike......Yea I have been lurking not posting much....
Nixer has it straight......glass is best, most of the biggest frogs are terrestrial so height isn't that important when you get into the smaller frogs height then becomes an improtant issue.....I would go with a 20g bigger is always better just like reefing.....Crickets like Nixer said will in most cases be to pig unless you can get some pinhead crickets.....One of the best things to do is also make some connections locally as well just incase you have a need for food cause your flies have crashed......Sounds like you getting an idea of what you want also check out pics of other peoples vivariums to see and get an idea of what you want to build. They don't have to be extravagant either. Some of the best looking ones or most functional are ones that are simple.......
Gorgeous vivarium, I miss mine- your thread really makes me want to start up frogs again, but I just don't want to do fruitflys and run to the store all the time for crickets again. Grrr...tradeoffs are annoying!

I always looked at the two as being really similar. A south american cichlid tank always reminds me of a tegu or monitor vivarium- you have a set-up of which the animal is the main viewing point. Even with most other herptiles, the setup is just a side-show at the most, and utilitarian most often. With frogs, you create a near eco-system/environment, very similar to reefing. The closet other thing in the "reptile" domain is doing a big chameleon setup, but unless you get a simply MASSIVE amount of space, it just doesn't get to the same level. Frogs, you can take a very reasonable amount of space and create a full blown environment and it's just a gorgeous piece, PLUS you have the frogs in there to boot!

Going to see about getting a tank tomorrow...I wanted to get one of those fancy ones, but I may just get a little cheapo 20-30 gallon tank to start...don't really want to get too serious into it until I'm really sure I'm going to like it.
Still researching about plants and how the filtration for the whole thing is going to work.... I understand that the plants basically use the frog poop as fertilizer..but how do the layers work as far as filtration goes? I'm confused on this...
Also, any recommendation for a good dart frog forum? :) frog2frog? :)

I sent you an e-mail back......The substrate don't filter anything, but a ground cover along with the leaf litter is a place for springtails and isopods to live....It also allows for you to plant plants in. A 20g-30g will be fine the reason a lot of people use the Exo-terra viv is that going through the front then the top is easier.....I have had no issues yet but I am one week into having my viv up and operating. What you want to avoid is a soggy over saturated substrate so if you do a water feature you will want to have it no drain onto the actual substrate......I sent in the e-mail the 2 main boards that I am on with a lot of info for you to search....

Have you heard your males calling at all yet? Know you said it's just been a week, but still, sometimes they get randy in a new environment.

YEa my male was calling in QT and has been calling all day everyday since they were put in there.....

I also checked with a LFS and they said they could order in dart frogs for me so that I wouldn't have to pay the $40 for shipping...pretty helpful.

The orange lamasi are really neat. I like how their legs are so different from their bodies.
I haven't checked out tadpoles work yet....all I know about is tadpoles found in ponds around here :P I won't bother checking into that part of the hobby until I actually get a tank setup anyways. Very cool pickup though! and FREE...never bad.

Also google Quarintine practices for frog as well, some do it some don't it is really a personal choice....I did it to be safe and for long term health......
Yeah, I was reading about that a couple days ago. It sounds scary to NOT do it...what if a bacterial infection goes rampant in your vivarium and you have to remove everything to remedy it?? that would suck.

Been talking to the local guy...apparently he's also into saltwater and I asked if he'd be interested in trading some coral frags for frogs...seems he is interested in that :)
