Hello All, Its been about 5 years since my last tank. It was a 90 gallon with a 40 gallon sump. I had it for about 3 years. Fast forward to now. I got married bought a house with a basement. I am now wanting to get back into reefing. I have been on here for a good while but I wasn’t that involved on the forum until now. Look forward to meeting you all.
The build:
The plan is to setup the sump/fuge in the basement and pump up into the display. I have already added shoring under the floor where the tank will sit. Basement is a very clean area with floor drains, water, and dedicated power hook up. Also adding fresh outside air into the fish room to keep co2 down levels low. Already mounted the RO unit and have 2 55 gallon storage tanks.
The tank is 220 gallon. I go pick it up tomorrow. 74x24x30 with a hood. I will be making my own stand. Looking to add 2 Orphek icons for light. As for the powerheads I am still in debate on how I want to tackle that. I still have my old Icecap gyre 150 and a tunze but thats not going to be enough for this tank. I would like to stick with one brand on this build but have heard horror stories on ecotech with the mobius app. I don’t want to fight that. I know I definitely want a gyre on top both side. Any ideas on brand etc. for lower powerheads? For sand I want to use a little under an inch in the display. Caribsea special grade. Probably 1/2-3/4 inch bed and utilize sump for extra sand. As for aquascape I am still deciding. I don’t want a bunch of randomness. I personally feel thats not very natural looking. Looking into possibly shelf rock going up half the tank. This will hopefully become a mixed tank with majority sps with a couple plate corals which will do great on the shelves.
Sump/refugium area I am also still looking into the options. I want something pretty good size I can have both mechanical and natural filtration. I already bought the redsea skimmer and have a kessil grow light. I will do all my testing and everything in the basement. Looking into getting an Apex also with the energy bar, ato, and dosing pump. I used the cobalt neo therm heaters on my 90 gallon and they never failed. I still have them but I will probably buy new. Are the cobalts still good heaters? Recommendations? Lastly return pump will be the Sicce syncra 9.0 to get it up there. I already have the syncra 6.0 and I love that thing. Never let me down and is very quiet.
It’s not going to happen fast because there are still a lot I have to prepare and buy. I am very optimistic about this new build.
