I don't have fb or any form of social media. I think it is completely ridiculous and sucking the intelligence right out of people. I see people out to dinner who sit there and photograph their plates before they even eat haha, and then their thumbs are going a million miles per hour to post for all to see "oh look, im out to eat". I am so incredibly thankful that I grew up in the 90's, the last great decade, before all this garbage happened. Matter of fact, I told my father that exact quote yesterday.

In our hands and pockets, we carry all the knowledge of the known world. With a processing power greater than the Space Shuttle ever thought of, and we use it to look at pictures of cats.
People, not all, don't want to look up and learn how to do it. They want someone to tell each one over and over again.

Someone on reef Reddit yesterday was asking if they could fill their tank with 400tds tap water. At some point people need to do the research and google, I researched 3 months before I even filled with water

I said if you don't know what that is than maybe you shouldn't be owning a clam.
Assuming you are not a programmer, if I showed you some lines of code from a webpage, would you know what it was for? Perhaps you could if you have seen code before, but not everyone can. That doesn't mean that they shouldn't be able to use the Internet.

I can guarantee that there are countless things about the life you have in your reef that you don't know about. If the bar of ownership is, "you must fully understand it", then almost none of us would have tanks to begin with. Keeping an aquarium isn't about preserving life - if that were the goal, the industry should just not exist. Being an aquarist is about learning about the life we keep in our boxes of the ocean. With the ideal of keeping it all alive and thriving for it's natural lifespan (or longer), of course, but the journey to be able to do that is just as important as the destination.

So while I applaud your (and anyones) desire to help other aquarists, I don't agree with the position that the person shouldn't own a clam simply because they don't understand the anatomy of clams at a glance (and potentially while in an emotional state due to the loss of life in their tank).
I can - most certainly - understand your frustration when people get into things they don't know enough about. It's hard to hear about an innocent creature suffering (and perhaps dying) because of solvable ignorance. We can only hope that the OP and others have learned a bit more about clams in the process.

@DLHDesign difference in this case being that this is a live animal that is having its life played with, the Internet is not a living being that can be harmed. Secondly, although we certainly don’t know everything about our tanks, the inhabitants in it, or the ocean and probably never will, we do have more than enough information on clams to make a successful attempt at keeping them.

the Internet is not a living being that can be harmed
Fair enough. And yet; the people using the Internet (such as the person on FB that the OP talked with) are very real people. People who's lives can be - and far too often are - harmed. But yes; the analogy was not perfect, I'll certainly grant you that. :-)

we do have more than enough information on clams to make a successful attempt at keeping them.
Who is "we"? It's clearly not everyone who has ever owned a clam. Is your "we" some aquarists group that have passed a test on clams that I don't know about?
And how did that "we" get all that knowledge? Did they discover it through meditation? Or was it trial-and-error, and talking with each other, and asking questions when something happens that is unknown?

I've killed two clams in my tank. I had done what I thought was enough research on them, yet they still died. For the first, I still don't know what - specifically - killed it; best guess is my tank was too young and/or my params swung too much. For the second, it was because my parameters went crazy due to an unrelated-to-the-clam accident. So I'd done research, and still clams died. Knowing about how to care for clams doesn't guarantee that clams will survive. Reefing is hard.
My third clam is doing great, for whatever that's worth. :-)

One thing we don't know from the OP is WHY the foot was detached. We have no idea what it was that caused the clam to suffer. All we know is that someone didn't know what a detached clams foot was. Given the number of people practically every day that ask for ich to be identified, I don't really see how asking for something like a clam's foot (which is far more uncommon) to be ID'ed should be either surprising, nor worthy of even unintentional derision.

I've been in a lot of different fish related FB groups and forums. I'm also admin of a kink related FB group with 7000 members. You would think that the kink group would be the group with the most drama and trolling but nope, it's in the fish keeping groups where the real stuff happens lol. I can't stand them anymore. Thank the gods for R2R! <3

Couldn't agree with you more for the most part. There is so much in our reeds we know nothing about. And when a disease that we haven't encountered rears its ugly head there's nothing to do but learn from that point on.

I think what irked me was it was a simple thing of a clam that spending 5 minutes total researching and reading you know what part of the clam it was. Especially when most things written about clam health it is a main priority. At least what I've encountered in my experiences. If that makes sense.

I think it's a sensitive subject for me to something I get passionate about. The living creatures in our tanks get looked down on as not as important if it dies compared to say an animal like a dog.

Who are you The Clam Police?!! You spewed your self righteous indignation very condescendingly and got checked for doing it. Then came here and spewed some more and apparently got what you were looking for, validation! Smh
Unlike here on the forums FB users don’t pull any punches. You got served what you deserved. Banned from the group NOT from FB. Big difference.

As for the FB haters, it’s a wonderful tool if you know how to use it.

You are absolutely correct.it is a tool and so are its users but I suppose that simple life observation is a self righteous statement too

We'll seen as I'm banned and your likely one of the people who didn't like what I said take some screen shots and post it see who was more out of line hey? And my title here I made a typo was meant to say banned form fb group lol it would be wierd to be banned from Facebook for your hurt feelings lol

Also please tell me your the one who banned me for telling the truth, and if you are I would like to know a few things:

- what rule exactly did a violate to be banned?
- do you ban everyone equally?
- not once did I use foul langue or personally attack anyone despite that being used against me, did they receive any ban?

I came to r2r from rc because I was over the dictatorship and unfair treatment. If your going to have rules everyone needs to abide by them. To ban someone for telling the truth, and continuing in a debate with constructive arguments. Simply because you cannot have any rebuttal to the point put forward and get embarrassed makes you gutless in my books.

Dilly dilly!
It's like that on every site/app. Reef Central was my worst encounter. It was a bunch of grown people acting like 12 year olds. They would wait for a new person to post. Then talk like a bunch of know it alls sarcastically around the new person for like 8 pages. I got banned from there in 2 weeks, because I could get .000TDS without using an RO/DI system. God for bid, because I reinvented the wheel for getting .000TDS. I was not allowed to post how to do it. As you can see from my profile pic what I am doing works.

I don't have face book. Some of my family members do and the only thing I see happen eventually is it leads to arguments. JMO. LOL!

Usually a sign of civilized conversations and debates is just that, pulled punches. You don't win debates by punching someone in the face, quite the opposite, it's usually a sign that you have no arguments left but are too embarrassed to admit it.
