I’ve been battling hair algae for a bit now. I manually remove during water changes and use a toothbrush afterwards. Tank looks like a million bucks until I get back from work after a 2 week hitch. It will look like this.
It will pull off like a carpet on the substrate, my snails look like they’re in a hair band and rocks have beards.
I’ve been struggling with low pH since day 1. Tank has been running for little over a year now. Now I have a Icecap CO2 scrubber and so far has been raising it up slowly. Tank is a AIO IM30 Long, I am running some activated carbon bags and one small bag of GFO from the IM Purity midsize kit. As for export, i have a IM DC midsize skimmer, filter floss in the media basket, ceramic media, and the media cubes from algae barn. I will use a filter sock from time to time but I just made a diy algae scrubber and us the IM chaeto max light.
I tested for NO3 and PO4 today to see what my levels are. And here are the results.
0 nitrates and .03 phos. I have been feeding every other day, and just enough for the fish to consume in about a min or 2. Stock right now is 1 clown, 1 bengai cardinal, 1 scooter blenny, 1 cleaner shrimp, 3 blue legged hermits, 1 emerald crab, 8 astrea snails and 1 turbo snail. Parameters
dont mind the dip, I swapped out reagents. Numbers have been pretty consistent. I run the Saxby light schedule for a photo period of I think 10hrs with 1hr ramp times. I know hair algae is sucking up the nitrates as it’s just like a pothos vine we use in fresh water tanks to combat nitrates. I need help with getting rid of the hair algae so no3 and po4 and get back to normal.
