Hows api?
API is fine as long as you understand that it is less precise than some others. API's ammonia test will also often not reach the true yellow color once a tank is cycled... any color that's slightly green but not as green as the second square can be considered to be 0.

api measures total ammo i think thats why you always get a reading. salifert measures free ammo.
if your looking for the best as stated API shoudnt be a choice.you get what you pay for

if you want cheap, api is thee way to go. i have had too many tests with api show no change in the color during cycling, and when compared against another test, it shows something different (including another api test). so i take their readings with a grain of salt. ive just never had consistent readings with their kits. for ammonia, i personally use red sea. i cant speak for any other brands out there.

I tried Hanna, API, salifert, Nyos, and found the red sea brand cheap and reliable . The Hanna works great too just more money.
Looked at hannah but very pricy. I have a hannah kh that needs to be checked out and the chemicles but not sure I want to invest in it more. Have to look and see.

I vote don’t buy one, it’s a waste of time. There isn’t any time we have to test for ammonia in display reefing. It’s predictable in all phases, including the cycle, for a display reef. Once you start a reef tank cycle each day that passes leads to the known completion date shown on every charts ammonia line. No kit is needed to ensure that completion, counting to day ten is what you measure

once the cycle date has passed, there’s no need to test for ammonia it can’t drift out of spec. Ammonia is the #1 most unneeded test in reefing, nitrite is #2.

It's useful in a hospital tank.
