Are Hanna checkers worth it?

About to buy some.used Hanna checkers off Facebook?
I'm getting them for $30 each with some reagents.
Worth it?

$30 each Checker is a good price, but if it's worth it depends on which ones, and how much you want to spend on reagents going forward.

Alk is useful, ultra low phosphate is useful,
I find Calcium is great, but for calcium API (yes!) is faster and good enough and so much less costly for reagents and no batteries.

pH i do not like Hanna, the reagent drop bottle is a source of error (unpublished data)

All of these meters require careful cleanup after use, and RODI water is very helpful for rinsing any test vial, Hanna or otherwise.

That's probably not bad, especially if you want to QT fish you may need the ammonia (otherwise skip it). Which phosphate?

Im starting a new tank and have old eyes and can't see the color difference on the salifert ammonia.
Not sure on the phosphate? Which one should I be looking for?

And make sure you investigate the costs of reagent replacements. I stand by my alk and Phosphorus ULR, but the other Hanna meters are significantly more expensive than lower priced options that give useable results, ime.

The ammonia comes with a full box of reagent. Im thinking after the cycle won't test ammonia much so won't go through reagents too much.

You likely won't need the ammonia unless you plan to setup more tanks or QT tanks or similar

Personally I feel the hanna phosphate tester is by far the best and it the only hanna I use. They are good for others but frankly too expensive to buy all those regents every month, every month the price seems to increase a little. I got off hanna last year and happily using salifert since then.

If you can swing the Hannah, go for it. Getting it used means you likely could sell it down the road for what you got it for. Most poeple seem to like them. I had a bunch I got used, but then ended up selling them for the Hannah mastertronic marine kit so I didn’t have a bunch of test kits laying around, but honestly, I probably should have just kept my nitrate and phosphate checkers. I used my used Neptune trident to track Alk, Ca, and Mg, and use salifert and Hannah to check the Neptune is calibrated every so often.

This was the best thing ive purchased for water testing.

I have hanna for copper, phosphate and calcium. Ive found that the salifert tests are good for alk, calc, nitrate and ammonia.

I might get a nitrate get some day.

Id say if you have a tank less than 60 gallons or minimal coral/frags, they are not worth the $

I only have the alk tester. Reagent is getting is getting really expensive, about a dollar a test. I only do two tests every other week, and I like the tester, but Salfert is probably just as good and a lot less costly.

I love my Hanna checkers. The calcium and magnesium catch a lot of flak on here. I do try to stick with Randy's no measure mag philosophy, but I do tend to look at it from time to time. My ICP tests always come back within the margin of error for both tests, and the mag is usually pretty close to the Salifert that I have as well. I did test mag over the weekend (since I was sending off an ICP and want to compare) with both the Hanna and the Salifert. They were both very close to each other, Hanna 1415ppm and Salifert 1390ppm. Now I'll have to see what the ICP comes back with in a couple of weeks.

I am a big fan of Hanna checkers! I use the alk, ph, calcium, nitrate, and low range phosphate. They are pricey for reagents, but I love them.

Hmm seems to be about 50/50.
I think I'll get them and mainly rely on salifert for mass checking and then occasionally use hanna to see if the Ole peepers are still working.

Hanna Phosphate ULR and Nitrate High-Range are highly recommended. I use Salifert for kH, Ca and Mg and am very satisfied with those.
