I don't use a controller, and maybe never will.

However, when I'm out of town I would like to be able to remotely monitor water levels, temp, maybe if an appliance is off or on etc.

I haven't done a single iota of research- just looking for a point in the right direction.

Neptune Apex, pick your version. Data is your friend and an early warning system. Go for what you can afford :)

GHL ProfiLux controller 4e or 4 or possibly a Profilux Mini.
The Mini doesn't have networking, so no ability to monitor remotely. If it did, I would probably pick one up for my 15 gallon tank.

If the mini was continuously connected by USB to a computer would you be able to remotely monitor that way?
I don't now, maybe if GCC was running and you had a way to remote login to your PC to look at it.

But at that point you'd probably be better off with a controller with networking.

If someone wanted to only monitor the 4e is really a pretty legit option. Without the extra cost of the powerbar, orp, and conductivity probes it keeps the price reasonably low (app. $400). Also is rock solid platform that has almost unlimited expandability and will hold its value over time. If I wanted to just have reliable monitoring I would probably look at the 4e.
