Best grade sodium nitrate

Hello everyone ,

We have to switch from laudwolf sodium nitrate to a new brand becojse they don't make it anymore.

Does anybody have any reccomendation of the best and purest one to use?

We found this one but it says industrial grade.

This is what i use.
Reagent grade is suitable for food and drug use.

Industrial grade is the lowest quality

Howdy Shane. I have been using this. Label says 99.95% reagent grade. Seems to work fine for me.

If y'all didnt know, food grade is actually a lower grade than lab/reagent grade. Its just certified for human consumption.

Plus that stuff is 5x the price of the reagent grade I linked! :face-with-spiral-eyes:

I think you are confusing "grade" with "purity". "Grade" generally refers to the intended use. Food grade means safe to consume and relatively low in heavy metals, other toxins, carcinogens, pathogens, etc. Reagent grade is not safe to consume and has no such assurances. I use reagent grade, analytical grade, HPLC grade, GC grade and other grades in the lab for their intended applications but not for my family or reef. I treat my reef as I do my family and stay on the safe side and use food grade.

Having said that, I think either food or reagent grade would be OK given the small amounts we are adding to our systems.

Also, even though the food grade may be more expensive, that bag in the photo above should last me 5 years or so.

Not confusing grade with purity. Reagent grade is typically higher in purity though what they use isnt certified for human consumption such as going through FDA and GMP.
