That's kind of an oxymoron, but I get what your asking. I'm not sure if guys are still using play sand or anything like that? I use Tropic Eden now on any tank I start and love it! Super clean and looks nice. It's not exactly cheap though

I am very "thrifty" and I tried my rounds with alternative substrates. Never again. I use special grade reef sand There was always a side effect to Southdown, etc.

Don't go cheap! I tried play sand in my 2nd tank, and ended up gutting everything 2 months in to redo with carribsea sand. I like the dry special grade or fiji pink. The fiji pink is a tad too small grain size for me though so I stick with the special grade.

Tropic Eden Reeflakes... at a 3.5mm grain size, it lets me really turn up the flow! :)
