Do you know the rock has high PO4? Some dry rock doesn't.

I would put it in saltwater for a week, then measure phosphates with a hobby-grade test kit. If the results are very high, you could use something like GFO or lanthanum-based products to drop it rapidly. If the results are just a little high, you might be able to just do one or two 100% water changes a week apart to get them down.

Previously when I got some rock with very high PO4, I put it in a 5g bucket and added a very healthy dose of lanthanum chloride. The next day I rinsed the rock, rinsed the bucket, and repeated. Two doses seemed to do the trick.

Can lanthanum bind to rock in any of its forms?

I know its dangerous for fish, is it possible to stick to rock then later come off and hurt fish?
