I was watching a master scolly on Ebay,starting bid was 299.99 What struck me odd, was there were 3 bids on the scolly. So how could the winning bid be 299.99? By the way, I won a sweet looking splatter goniastrea from same seller.

Everything happens in the last 2 minutes of the auction. Bid on a regal angel years ago that went from 89 to 355 in 3 minutes after sitting at 89 for a week :/

+1 the last 2 minutes is when the action starts. If I see something and I really gotta have it, I always wait til the last 2-3 minutes to start bidding.

I believe that the same person can up their own max bid and it will register as an additional bid. I'm not positive on this but I believe that's how it works.

I think 1 person places he's/her maximum bid then changes it 2 more times to a higher bid! Even though no one else places a bid it's still considered as 3 bids with the first bid being 299

Yes, that's how it works.

How is that different from just putting in a max bid with ebay? I've never lost an auction where someone bid less than me.

I've had so much bad luck with Ebay, even an item that's at $10 with 2 minutes to go can jump all the way to $60 instantly its crazy

I've used AunctionSniper since it first came out like 15 years? It's different from placing a Max bid, as it places it within the last 5 seconds (you can change that timing to different values).

I still don't get how that is different from max bid, unless you are saying you can win below my max bid.

If I enter the max bid on Ebay, it immediately gets posted and it starts the bidding war. They can then come back and outbid you. With the sniper, they don't even know you're interested. Five seconds before the auction is over, it places my bid and they don't have a chance to come back.

Max bid still wins whether it's placed directly on Ebay or through a sniper program.

It can be frustrating but I always remind myself I wouldn't pay that much for the item. It can make you second guess yourself when you lose something by a dollar or 2. Off topic somewhat but I hate when people buy out stuff at stores and then price it higher on their auctions. For me it is Polo t-shirts. I love them but I will admit I'm fat and buy a 2xl-tall. We have a Polo outlet near us and I go every few months to try and buy t-shirts but they are always out of the larger sizes. I finally resorted to ebay and found a seller in the same town as the Polo outlet that was selling the t-shirts in all the available colors for more than the Polo store sells them plus an obvious money making shipping charge. Next to the bid amount it says they have sold over 2000 t-shirts. Now I know why I can't ever find any t-shirts there. I complained to the store and they claimed they don't allow anyone to buy in bulk to keep that from happening. I assume it is probably an employee and along with their employee discount is making a good profit on ebay.

I would love to sell on there but I've heard too many horror stories of sellers getting scammed and paypal usually takes the buyers side. I used to work with a lady that sold on their and she had some funny stories. She said she had a lady buy some stuff from here and then the lady contacted her and asked if she could go to a certain store and buy a pair of shoes for her because she didn't want to get out.

The point of sniping is not to let the underbidders realize the mistake they have made bidding too low. If I bid "normally" before the end and I am $5 above your max bid, you are likely to pop another $5 or so to get back on top. Maybe you outbid me with $5, maybe not, maybe my max is $20 above your max bid, but it does increment me another $5 and you still lose, and I pay more. Or the flip side, you get the auction fever and bid it even higher since you've decided you really want this item. On the snipe side, I snipe it at the end, I outbid your max, but maybe not what you REALLY would have paid had you has time to think about it, and I win, for less. Sniping works.

I see the benefit but it doesn't work on people like me. I'm a casual bidder that usually bids low and then forgets about it. I forget most stuff I've bid on until I get the email saying I won or I've been outbid. If I'm outbid I delete the email and think nothing else about it. Most of the stuff I look at isn't one of a kind so there will be another one to bid on. I've never bid on anything aquarium hobby related which is surprising.

I could probably spend a small fortune on Ebay if I didn't have any self control. However, when I bid I place my max bid at what I'm willing to pay for the item, and leave it at that. If I get outbid I get outbid. I bought coral on there for the first time a few weeks ago and got a pretty decent deal. I didn't get everything I wanted, but I got three pretty cool frags, so I was happy.
