Do you all recommend them or no?

I currently have them under my tank, but I am wondering if they are necessary. I'm considering taking the box out and making the middle section into a refugium. I keep reading conflicting information, so I thought I would ask.

Most people don't use them because detritus can build up and create a nitrate factory.

Ok, so my skimmer, reactors, and live rock is enough? I just don't want to go through the hassle of taking them out just to need them back.
