Just wanted to show what I have done to my Biocube 32. These are great little tanks if you do not have a lot of room. Although they definetly have room for improvement with some of the equipment.

I started off with a completly stock biocube 32.

After the inital cycle, and first fish, I decided to add a Protien Skimmer. I was going to go with the Tunze 9001, but then found that Coral Life released a new Version of the skimmer made for the biocube. (No more Wood Air stone, its now a needle wheel)

After I added my last fish, i decided to try a refugium. I really hated the Stock filter tray any ways, so i got the Intank media and refugium basket. I also went the the Acke Grow light that intank suggested. This has been a great choice as my chaeto needs to be trimmed almost weekly now, and i now have no sign of algae in the DT.

Now that my tank had all the fish stocked, I really wanted to start getting into Coral, and quickly realized after losing a Duncan coral, that i needed to get a par meter and test the biocube Light. Well, i was shocked, with the lights on full blast, the highest par reading i registered in my tank was a poor 98par. right near the top of my live rock, in the center of the tank. Par towards the bottom and sides of the tank averaged at about 30-40 par. So i started searching for different light alternatives. Just as i was about to spend the money on a steves Led upgrade kit, i found a used Radion Xr15 pro g4 used, on Facebook, for $100 bucks. I decided to chance it, and get the radion. With all intentions of going rimless now, I decided to hack up my Biocubes hood to see if i could make the light work. I know that radion suggests that the light be atleast 7 inches above the water, but i just wanted to test it. To my surprise, I was able to tune the Radion to where im getting a good even par through out the tank, an average of 200-300 par near the top ( plenty for sps) and 130-200 in the lower half. So for now, i have decided to keep the Radion mounted to the Stock hood. Its been like this for about a month, so far no issues with coral health, algae, and the temp has not had any problems, never leaves the 77degree range. (apex controlled, and temp prob calibrated with a Digi-Sense Thermometer.

I will try and keep this updated with new pics every week or so, and let you all know if there are any more changes made. I will also get pictures of the Refugium and skimmer set up tonight, as well as some better pictures of the corals, unfortunetly my phone magnifies the blue spectrum of these radions.

Awesome tank! How is that flameback angel? I really wanted one for my 32g Fiji cube but not sure how it would be with a pair of clowns, firefish, and some lps (torch, hammer, gsp, etc)

The flame back has been a model citizen! Doesn't pick at the corals, or bother my 2 clowns or Midas blenny. But I do have a tank on stand by if he starts to become a bully.

That’s good to hear! I was thinking about a Midas Blenny too but I think my tank will be fully stocked, especially if I decide on the flameback. Did you order your angel online? I only have one lfs nearby and haven’t seen any

No, I got him at my lfs, wanted to make sure that I was getting a well mannered flame back. I'm lucky and have a rare lfs that is quite knowledgeable, and would bend over backwards should any issues arrive.

Well, the V2 skimmer has been on the fritz. Took it apart cleaned everything, but the pump keeps shutting off intermitantly. So, I have now taken the Coralife v2 skimmer out to keep as a back up and put a Icecap k1 nano in its place. Just put it in last night, so we shall see how this one does. Ive also added a beautiful Frogspawn and red gorgonian that i will try to get pictures of tonight if i remember.

Great set up! I have almost the same set up and I changed my return pump to a Sicce Syncra 2.0. I would love to have that protein skimmer but I have never heard anyone with a bio cube that was satisfied with their protein skimmer so I have been a little leery to buy one. You got an amazing deal on your light and I would absolutely love to do that because I don’t feel like I’m getting any good par from the stock lights.

Thank you!

Its only been about a week with the new Skimmer, but this has exceeded my expectations so far. I was not happy at all with the stock light par readings i was getting, and coud not pass up that deal on the Radion. How do you like the Sicce 2.0? I was debating on getting the Sicce 1.5 or the MJ1200 for my next upgrade. I may add another power head or play with the postion of my current 2, as i notice that poo tends to pile up on the left side of my tank.

Are these what you went with?

Edit: Dangit, can't get links to work. Did you purchase the $70 media basket and $43 fuge basket from inTank? I'd love to add a refugium to my tank, but it almost seems cheaper to set up a sump than to pay $110+ for a couple pieces of plastic. Especially since I already have a 10 gallon aquarium just waiting to be set up as a small sump. Have they been working really well for you?

yes, i went with the Intank Refuge and Media baskets. A bit expensive, something i could have made, but didn't feel like it. So far they have been working great. My nitrates have dropped from 40-60ppm to 5ppm, and my phosphates have dropped from .4 down to .006. My chaeto has been growing crazy, and im having to prune it every week or 2.

I thought about doing a sump under the stand, but decided against it as i will be moving in the next year (hopefully) and will set up my 90 gallon i have sitting in storage.

I love the 2.0 and I’m so glad I went with the bigger pump. I also added a Hydor Koralia 750/850 powerhead because I was having issues with dead space and detritus accumulation and two random flow generators.

I have the InTank media basket and Fuge basket but I was lucky enough to have bought mine three years ago when I got a great deal on the tank so they were much cheaper than they are now. I added a fuge light that I got on eBay and my Chaeto is doing great and it has made a tremendous change in my water parameters. Everything in the tank is better since I added the fuge basket and Chaeto . I run the fuge light on a 12 hour cycle opposite of the display tanks lights. In my media basket I have filter floss, two bags of Marine Pure gems, and a bag of Chemi-Pure Elite on the bottom shelf.

I like the idea of the return nozzle aswell, what brand is that? I like the idea of being able to have the return going in different directions.

Well, after testing the radion attached to my hood, I decided that it is too close to the water and was creating a hot spot for par right on top of my love rock. So I decided to cut a pice of acrylic and go hoodless. Just need to get a handle to lift it
Open easier. I also received a new return pump today. Which I'll install tonight.
