A couple of months ago I bit the bullet and removed the lid, switched to an AI Prime 16HD with a Kraken Reef Lid with the evaporation cover.
Can't say how happy I am with the decision, what a game changer. But like most things in life, not everything is positive. Even with the evap. cover, I am losing a lot of water daily which of course didn't happen with the stock lid. I realize that i can buy, and probably will, an ATO.
My real question is has anyone cut the stock lid to cover the back chambers or made a custom lid to cover the back chambers as I believe that's where most of the evaporation must be coming from.

I'd bite the bullet and get an ATO, even with back chamber covers most peninsula style tanks still have significant evaporation. Otherwise take a look at Intank, they have some back chamber covers for other tanks, they're heatbent ABS. You could do something like that.
